Here are some great sights for parents to use with their kids during social distancing. Many of these I have used in my own classrooms with my students with reading abilities from grades 1-12.
Wideopenschool.org is a great site to help parents who are home-schooling. They have a great weekly parent info booklet too, with goal setting, etc.
If you want to reduce your screen time, audio-book service Audible has lots of free stories available, which can all be streamed from a laptop or smartphone while you're doing other bits and bobs. They're also giving away hundreds of kids' books while schools are closed, and you don't even need an account to listen to them.
Google Arts & Culture is an app you can download on your phone/computer/tablet that allows you to visit museums around the world and famous monuments and even street views. Very cool!
Read and Write Gold an amazing Google Chrome extension. Allows for playback of texts, highlighting and dictionary creator for new vocab and a speech to text option. You need headphones with a mic for the speech to text option.
MediaSmarts.ca An awesome site for K-12 focussing on Media Literacy. It has great resources, project ideas, videos and anchor charts. It is a go-to for all medial literacy needs. Such an important resource for educators and parent alike in this media driven world.
Newsela This site is great for non fiction prose and has assignments for each article. The entire suite is free for the balance if the school year!
CommonLit - similar to Newsela, this site provides reading level appropriate texts in both non fiction and fiction genres. They are followed by multiple choice questions and have open ended written responses at questions too.
Khan Academy Kids- great free site for kids learning! Tons of subjects and learning activities for the inquisitive mind!
Currents for kids - current events content for kids to help them unpack this complicated world on their terms
Scholastic Kids - Choose the grade level you want and access content curated by Scholastic for kids.
TDSB Virtual Library - A fantastic resource for all TDSB students/parents (even non TDSB folks can access) - use the digital resources for amazing access to fantastic sites! Some of my favourites: Learn360, TVO, and CBC Curio!
ReadTheory is a great site for developing critical reading skills
