ABOUT

I am a writer who doesn't write - well, who hasn't written for a long, long, time. I used to write. I used to act. I used to entertain.

Used to.

I am Greek-Canadian. I am a teacher, a mother, a sister, a partner, a friend, a tennis fan. I am middle-aged. I feel a little stuck.

I'm pretty good at everything I put my mind to, but my mind wonders and I spend lots of time doing silly time-wasting things like, eating parmesan crisps (YUMMMM), sipping wine (ALSO YUMMMM), watching AGT (I CRY EVERY TIME) and surfing sales online. I no longer buy anything because I have everything. I have consumed to my fill and I'm still hungry - you know?

So here I am, writing. I am curious about this time in my life and in the lives of others. It is a super crazy time.

I am a lit teacher. Have been for 20 years. I find it hard to "RahRah" the new approaches to age-old challenges of literacy (poverty, race, gender) whilst negotiating new ones like instagram, snap-chat... There's the rock and the hard place.

I truly believe that media literacy is our only hope in restoring Democracy, thus fortifying its foundations: secular education, freedom of speech, and freedom of press. Because of the lack of media literacy among the general public, all three are currently in peril.

But it's pretty heavy stuff, so with a free hour and Google I would put the following in the search line:
Villas in Greece - pool boy included

(See what I mean by silly time-wasting stuff? Where are those Parmesan Crisps?)

What I want to get out of writing daily in this blog is an affirmation that not all is stuck. That there is still wiggle room for creativity & humour in our day-to-day, and that there is also hope for real discussion. So, please write back and let's get this party started!
